Six years ago when I started writing WhitakerOnline.org I decided I would never write to meet a deadline.

That is one advantage I can offer you here. I don’t get any money for doing WOL. I pay the small expenses connected with it. My little team is composed of volunteers who do the work because they think what the old man says is worth it.

The result is that you will never be asked to read something that I wrote up because I needed to get a WOL out for this week.

In fact, when I don’t get an inspiration during the week, you’ll get a better WOL. Some of the best ones are my reserve ones. The reserve WOLs are used when I don’t come up with something that week. They are writings on the world in general that I write when I feel really inspired.

When I made my living this way I was almost always under a deadline. On Capitol Hill I was often given assignments precisely because no one else could do the writing in time.

But if something I do for WhitakerOnline.org is not unique, I simply don’t write it. You may not consider it the best, but you will always find it unique. You would be astonished if you knew the number of WOLs I have written up, found that what I had written was something somebody else had already said or was just not interesting, and just thrown away.

It has to be good, and like so many of us, I am my own cruelest critic.

I write for nobody but my readers, not for my employer or for the market.
