Sometimes You Gotta Laugh

Posted by Bob on November 10th, 2004 under How Things Work

One of my best friends and supporters wanted to be sure I got it right. So when I wrote the article below, “Cut Off the Water” and finished it with regard to Fallujah stating, “the water is running just fine,” he corrected me.

I appreciated his concern with my being right, very much.

He cited an article that said that, once the attack actually began, American troops cut off the electricity.

As a result the residents of Fallujah were complaining that they had no running water.

Does anybody but me get the humor here?

For days every news service on earth has known that Fallujah was about to become a combat zone. Historically if an area is about to become a combat zone, you get the hell out. But a lot of folks just stayed there.

Now it IS a combat zone.

And the big complaint people in this combat zone have is that their TV won’t work and their running water is off.

Poor babies!

Fallujah is located in a third world country that urbanized. New York, Detroit, et.al., are all thrid world cities in a first world country. I’d bet a dollar to a doughnut you’d see the same thing happen in the US. Most urbanites fear the bears and tigers running loose in the unclaimed wilderness out here in flyover country. Plus, of all the nightmares, we have ugly guns that might assault people 🙂

Consider the title of that blog entry “Cut Off The Water!” to have been a “pop quiz” for those who read Bob’s book. If you “failed” the quiz, you’ll have to go back and reread the book.

I agree with Richard. I can see U.S. urbanites doing the exact same thing.

The closest we usually come to a situation like Fallujah’s here in the U.S. is with hurricane evacuation orders. It seems like there’s always some idiot who decides that the evacuation order is intended for everyone else.

The power company turns my power off on a regular basis, so I might not view this as something out of the ordinary.

Before the war started, when somebody mentioned WMD, I laughed. But what I told them was: “Watch out for the camels”

    “Camels, they said. What camels.”

So I told them. I had heard from reputable sources that deep underground Saddam was breeding millions of flying camels. And when the time was right, they would be fed depleted uranium and then allowed to fly over here and, well, bomb us.

I haven’t seen them yet. But hey, if some night you hear very large “raindrops” on your roof, get out your air freshener and geiger counter, because it may well be that the camels have arrived at last. And don’t say I didn’t warn you.
