How to Compose a High Level Memorandum

When I first went to work for John Ashbrook, one of the regular flu epidemics hit Washington. photo cb_zps9db501a6.jpg

I was out with flu a couple of days, so I had to write him a note, a professional, published writer to the senior congressman who had hired him.  What would the format be?

A major part of communication is to keep your reader in mind, instead of concentrating only on what YOU want to express.

John had gone to the same type grammar schools I had, with the wooden desk that had an indentation at  the top for a pencil.

So I drafted a note for my wife to sign:

“Dear Mister Ashbrook,

Please excuse Bobby for being out for two days because he was sick.

Mrs. Whitaker”

He really enjoyed it.

As the AMPWs say, you have to be sophisticated to communicate in the Big Leagues.
