Silly

That word keeps echoing in my mind.

Christianity’s early history says grown men, bishops, were literally killing each other over the exact Nature of God. They weren’t out on missionary efforts. They were literally fighting over the exact nature of God.

Do you understand the exact nature of God?

Does anybody?

In Constantinople there were chariot races and the two big groups were the Blues and the Greens. Each group had its stable of horses. Each also had its theology.

I’m a history nut. I enjoy this kind of thing. But it would take many boring pages to explain the exact nature of God the Blues championed versus the one the Greens championed. It had to do with whether Christ was at the beginning or not.

Roman Catholics and Orthodox don’t let each other attend their respective Eucharists because of the filioque.

The Roman Catholic filioque says that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son while the Orthodox Church’s much older doctrine says the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father only.

God really worries about this, day and night. No matter how pious you are, if you don’t have the right idea about this proceedeth stuff, you can’t sit at the Lord’s Supper.

Somebody once said that if two or more people gather together in Jesus’ name, there He would be also.

But that was just Jesus who said that, and nobody can make a living listening to Him.

Back in the 1930s, Stalin was already everything from a scientific genius to a prophet to a hero to everything else the USSR could bestow. So he decided to become an “intellectual.”

So back to Wordism.

In the 1930s, Stalin got bored with being declared a Genius and a Hero and all the rest. He wanted to be an Intellectual, too.

Stalin decided to find a Theoretical Question to deal with. One Great Question — I won’t bore you with the details — was whether, in Marxist Theory, something was part of superstructure or part of the Base. One professor who said whateverthhellitwas was part of the Marxist Base was being overwhelmed by the other Marxist Intellectuals and they were getting ready to arrest him — ARREST him, mind you, this was the routine fate of anybody who lost an academic Wordist debate.

Then Stalin intervened and said whateverthehellitwas was indeed part of the Base and not the superstructure and all the other professors said they had been wrong and Stalin was a theoretical genius.

Yes, they were all adults.

These are the same people who tell me race isn’t important. What is important, they tell me, is Catholicism or Calvinism or Islam or Jehovism or Moonieism or Liberty, Equality and Fraternity or the Flat Tax or their particular variety of True Socialism — there are at least a hundred that I know of — or Constitutionalism or True Americanism or the Brotherhood of Man or Going Where No Man Has Gone Before or the Rights of Native Americans and Animals — there doesn’t seem to be distinction — or Evil Man’s Destruction of Nature or….
