I pulled into our Sevierville motel parking about noon Friday. Beside me was a young man who was dead asleep in his car who turned out to be Trucker Roy. He was waiting for his room to open up.
I had a suite with Derek Black. Derek was the convention organizer and his room was already cleaned so I didn‘t have to go to sleep in my car. I went back to my car, had a senior moment, set off the alarm, and that served to wake up the young man I found to be Trucker Roy.
Derek was extremely busy. The only time I saw him in our room was once that first day for about ten minutes. I don’t know if he slept elsewhere or if he slept at all. I do know that I had that whole big suite entirely to myself until I drove off Sunday.

All that opportunity to harvest one of the greatest analytical and political minds in U.S. history. Squandered.
I volunteered to do grunt work at the seminar some time ago. No one took me up on it. Either they didn’t trust me enough to help out or they don’t trust anyone but themselves to get the job done right.
Any way you roll the dice, you can only wear so many hats before you start to get hat-head, then a bald spot.
Derek needs to learn the power of delegating. Maybe then he would have had time to chat you up, porch talk style.
