I received word that our Stalwart Bugser, HD aka Al Durrett has passed away. He was 84 years old, born in 1941, the same year as coach; Bob Whitaker. In fact, Bob and HD likely crossed paths early on in their lives at the University of Virginia between the years of 1960 – 1967. Bob was at UVA for economics and HD was there for engineering. It is crazy to think how paths in life may cross.

I first crossed paths with HD in 2012 on Bob’s blog; BUGS. He was an active commenter on the site and regularly participated in Bob’s coaching sessions. We quickly learned that we were living in the same vicinity, and organized to meet up. My husband, daughter and I spent Christmas of 2012 with HD in Redwood City and after that enjoyed many hikes, road trips and a trip to Half Moon Bay for my birthday in 2013. He was a Stalwart Bugser and we really enjoyed getting to know him.

In 2013 HD became heavily involved with his White House Petitions project. The Obama admin had created a website which allowed people to submit petitions about pressing issues. If those petitions garnered enough signatures the White house was to make a response. Every petition he posted, he worked tirelessly to get the needed 150 signatures to make them visible to the public on the site. He always managed to utilize a current hot topic and weave the mantra message in. It was a platform that HD wanted to exploit and he did it consistently. Several times garnering media attention.

In December 2013 HD and several other BUGsers joined Bob and I on a farm in Tennessee. During this visit Bob wrote a script called “Joy from Freedom Farm” and HD was eager to participate in making a short film out of it but due to his living circumstances he became concerned about releasing it. We decided to wait until it wouldn’t be an issue for him. And as fate would have it, now couldn’t be a more perfect time for this explanation of hate speech – Joy from Freedom Farm
