You’re right. What Al said was a joke.

People often accuse Germans of not having a sense of humor. But a throughgoing German like you has an overwhelming loyalty that makes you resent anything that sounds like an insult to someone you are loyal to.
You suspect that Al is joking at me, but you want to make damned sure he is not insulting me, first and foremost.

If that makes you sound like you don’t have sense of humor, you say to hell with it. Loyalty first.

As the person you are giving your German loyalty to, I am flattered and grateful. I could bashfully say I don’t deserve it, but that would be an insult to you.

Screw bashfulness. I am mostly German, too. Loyalty first.
